The Big Fish Story:
Well the fall striper run is poised and ready to go...but when is the question. The surf was down and getting the kayak out wouldn't be a big deal..coming back in with the rising tide might be a different story though. Once out through the surf I put out to rods to paddle troll, 1- was an 8' casting rod with an okuma level wind reel loaded with 20lb test and trolled a 5" yozuri floater diver, I ran that from the back of the yak with the rear rod holders, the other rod was a 5' ultra lite with 8lb trilene and a small lite shakesphere spinning reel and that went into the fron scotty holder, and trolled an 1oz Ava jig tipped with Gulp sandeel 4". Once out and on the troll I was in about 20' of water and was looking at the amazing amount of bait in the water, sandeels, spearing, mullet and bunker. Just as I was wondering how the fish were going to notice my baits with all the competition I saw on my fishfiner (Humminbird) a school of bait fish near the bottom and what appeared to big bigger fish below them, I stopped my paddling and let the ava sink to the bottom and when it did a I paddled fast trying to bring the lure through the bait and then WHAM the small 5' rod nearly broke in half it bent into the deepest U, I had a hard time getting the rod out of the holder but when I did the fight was on. To make matters worse the back reel start screaming off anoth big fish on, but I had to ignore the reel screaming because of the fish I was fighting holding the rod on the butt and above the connection point so it would not break. Finally the rear fish got off as the one I had on started pulling me into the surf zone I had to wrestle the fish (very carefully) to get him to go the other way, which he finally did. So after 35mins with this fish I finally got him to my Boga and into the kayak. This little reel worked flawlessley the drag never stopped working even when the fish gave sudden bursts of speed and power. I caught one more in this fashion and called it a day. Anyone who has ever caught bluefish knows their power and fight and nothing beats this experience then with lite line, small tackle and a kayak

excellent job! definite 5 your efforts. just so you know, the bait in my pic is a castaic catch 22 swimbait. they make several models, not just trout. and i think they'd do fine in salt. i have a couple and i really like mine. you can check 'em out several places online. good luck.

nice blues I've often thought about using a kayak to fish the shoal section of the Savannah below Augusta Ga. It's not accessible by boat and I'm sure has monster largemouth and stripers. 5/5
