Hank Parker knows that in order to really show off that monster catch, you gotta have a solid story to back it up. A great tale is more than just descriptive; it takes what would be an ordinary day on the water and makes it legendary.
Stories as big as their marine counterparts deserve recognition. Hank and his BerkleyBigFish crew hand out the Whopper of a Tale award based on a story's written quality and the amount of "keyboard grease" that was put into typing it out. Now, that doesn't mean you have to write a novel to be considered; rather, any story that accurately tells of an extraordinary fight to the finish, finesse with the line or out-of-this-world weather conditions will surely catch Hank's eye. So sharpen your wit and fit your best tale to print! We'll be scanning the site to see if YOUR story is truly a Whopper of a Tale!

Caught my lunker on May 9th, 2010, Mother's Day. It was at 10:30am overcast skies with on & off showers, 60 degrees with 30 mph winds. It was not raining at the time of this catch, tho. She was caught at Lake Fork with guide James Caldemeyer showing me the hotspots and informing me that at this time of year the bass were mostly done spawning and staged just outside of the dropoffs and feeding on bluegills that were in full spawn. Naturally, we were throwing bluegill colored crankbaits that he bought the day before at Academy Outdoors & Sports. He bought all they had, he told me..lol. When this monster bit, i immediately knew i had a good one ...read more »

My 14 year old son and I were on a Canadian fishing trip in Northwestern Ontario near the small town of Perrault Falls. It was June 2nd and the weather was beautiful that day, blue skies around 60 degrees. We were fishing the base of the falls for smallmouth but were not having near the luck we did the day before. My brother and nephew were fishing in a nearby boat and none of us were getting any bites that morning. I casted near a large rock adjacent to a weedbed and boom, the fish took off. I knew it was a large fish because it headed to deeper water immediately and I could not move the fish at ...read more »

While fishing for Walleye on the Rainy River on the Minnesota / Ontario boarder just east of Baudette, Mn I hooked this 48lb. sturgeon. I was using a medium light action rod and medium action reel with Berkley 8lb XL mono with a 3/8 oz gold colored lead head jig tipped with a fat head chub minnow. I knew I had a large fish on but I never expected to catch one of these ancient river monsters using such light tackle. This fish held the bottom which ran between 17 and 20 ft deep and ran up and down the river for about a half mile. My partner did an excellent job controlling the boat so my line would not ...read more »

I got quite a story on this big fish, but it is all true. I just got off work when my buddy called me and asked if he could take his dad out to my ice house on north center lake in lindstrom MN. I had a lot of stuff to do around the house but I never pass up a chance to take someone out fishing so I said come on out. We got out to the house and I got both of them set up and we started fishing. It was about 4:00 and the bite had not turned on yet. I had just switched over to my crappie pole, a jason mitchel spring bobber rod lined with ...read more »

By the time I reached the rail greaser, I realized why it had been so long since my last trek to Hixson Springs. The rail road tracks were just as hard or harder to walk on today then they were (10 years ago). But the memories of monster fish that hang out in the spring were just too hard to resist. I had been there before, and caught lots bass, bluegill & 40 lb carp.
The trail to the spring was even tougher than I remembered too, as I scooted down the steep rocky bank, to the spring boiling up out of the ground, right next to the creek. My friends that came with me wouldn’t come down & ...read more »

Went out on a private boat out of Corpus Cristi, TX. Boy was it rough going out. The waves were about 8' on the way out. My, not having a tough stomach, hugged the waste basket most of the hour drive out to the oil rigs where we bottom fished for bait. I was not feeling well at all. After catching bait the captain decided to troll. After not too long, the captain yelled "FISH ON' and looked at me and said "Bill get in the chair". Even though I was still sort of "green around the gills" as they say, I did as he directed. I fought the 250 lb blue marlin for 25 minutes according to the captain. ...read more »

My boyfriend, Toby Mougey, took me fishing at Moon Lake, a lake he grew up on for some catfishing. He had always told me that there were huge catfish in this lake and more definately the state record. I found out how true this was after my catch. I was using a frog for bait and fishing in the evening. He had just caught one that was 16lbs. Just as I was helping him rig up again, my bait alert started screaming and line was just tearing out. I grabbed a hold of the rod, 8' Berkley Glowstick, and set the hook. It felt absolutey huge! It started taking drag and was ...read more »

A light rain drizzled around us when arrived at the airport in Juneau. The family friend who had come to pick us up informed me that this was one of the wettest summers in the past forty years, with only four dry days throughout June, July, and August. I heard the roar of engines overhead, and looked up in time to see a column of seven helicopters heading off to the east.
“There goes the suicide squad,” said our friend. “They’re taking tourists over to look at the Mendehall Glacier.”
“Why do you call them the ‘suicide squad’?” I asked.
“Because they’re always crashing—people die up there every year.”
I smiled, though it seemed rather morbid. This was my first trip to Alaska, and ...read more »

first cast of the day, my first ever walleye on the fly rod
in total i caught over 200 white suckers
i also caught over 50 walleyes between 12-20"
dad got a beautiful 7lber
toward the end, i tied on a swimbait, determined to beat my dad. and i fished it aggressively, eventually catching a long beauty at 6lbs
dad was starting to brag, and i tossed the Gulp alive minnow a few more times. i said to myself that the next cast would be my final cast. i fished the swimbait extremely fast and aggressive along the bottom, and once the swimbait came into view, i noticed a large shadow following it, once it seen me, it quickly turned ...read more »

i've always heard it's better to be lucky than good. and i definitely was lucky the day i caught my first double digit bass. it was a rainy spring day and i had just arrived at the lake. i was about to launch my boat when i noticed some movement about 5 yards down the bank. i went to check it out and found this monster of a bass on a bed in some lily pads. even though the male was quite a little chunk himself, this big girl here absolutely dwarfed him. she was so huge that it was hard for her to keep her entire body submerged as she rolled around on ...read more »

I've lived on a 1700 acre lake in Cicero, In for 14 years. It was 7pm in the evening on May 11 2009. It was a full moon. I was only going to fish for 30 minutes. I had a prespawning area were I have caught 7lb bass. I shot to that area and made 4 cast with my Hank Parker Classic spinnerbait when she hit. I was by myself with no other boats around. Needless to say I was lost in the moment. I knew it was a good fish. She dove deep and then came up to attempt to throw the bait. That's when I saw the fish. The first words out of my mouth were "oh my ...read more »

Hello Berkley, After 2 weeks of cold fronts and nightly near freezing temperatures the weather finally warmed up enought to hit Ceazars Creek Lake in Southwestern Ohio. Although the forecast was for low 80 degree temp and winds between 18 and 25 mph I loaded the 1979 Ranger 1780V and headed to the lake. The word from local fishermen was that all species were hard to catch but a day on the lake, fish or not, is alway time well spent.
The 20 plus mph winds made working the main lake points and shoreline nearly impossible buit I continued to work crankbaits in areas that I thought would hold bass of walleye. I never had a hit except for one ...read more »

I LOVE TO FISH!! I live in beautiful Western Mass. and have the opportunity to fish many species, including lake trout, rainbow trout, brook tout, landlocked salmon and my favorites largemouth and smallmouth bass in deep clear water. I also very much enjoy saltwater fishing off the shores of Cape Cod, Rhode Island and especially inshore saltwater in and around Clearwater, Florida. During the first week of Feb., 2008, my son Joe and I took a spur of the moment 3 day fishing trip to Tampa/Clearwater Florida. We literally decided to go at 6 p.m. one night, and were on a flight from Boston to Tampa at 6 a.m. the next morning. We have "snowbird" ...read more »

well it was january of 09. wind was blowing 10-15 out of the north and it was already only 40 degrees outside so it was almost miserable.the water temp was 41 and the bass realy werent biting.i had a bass tournament in a couple weeks so i had to keep on goin tryin to find some fish. we had been fishing alot of deep flats, deep points, shallow to deep ledges and realy couldnt figure out what the bass were doing. there was very little bait activity so that made it even harder. so before we were planning to head back to the ramp i had one more spot that i wanted to try that i had been studying for ...read more »

This is a tale of my son Ralphi, and the one that didn't get away. The day started at sun up.We were very anxious to find a fishing spot. This is the first time we have been to big bass pond known as CLEARLAKE,in northern California. The weather conditions weren't exactly ideal. The wind was blowing about 15mph and the lake looked a little intimadating. We threw on our life jackets and decided to take a cruise.Locals at the baitshop had told us where to go to try and catch some crappie.Atleast that was the plan.We motored up to the area but there were already a half dozen boats there.I turned the boat around and found a likely spot not too far away.We got ...read more »
